Breaking Workshop at the District Primary School, Newton-le-Willows

UC Crew have completed our final Breaking workshop with the District Primary School, Newton-le-Willows being our last stop on our school workshop tour funded by the Community Foundation For Merseyside’s ‘Merseyside Investment Fund’.

UC Crew was able to deliver funded Break Dance and Parkour workshops in schools across St Helens, to give children and young people a chance to try a new activity, meet positive male role models and steer away from anti-social behaviour and gang culture.

Participants of school workshops where able to attend fortnightly classes and Breaking youth club on a Monday evening in Haydock for £1.00. This was to reduce the financial barrier of learning and give them a chance to take up Breaking as a hobby.

St Helens Breaking Classes (St Helens Break Dance Classes)

UC Crew have had a successful spring with an influx of B-Girls (Break Dancing Girls), who are passionate about Breaking, battling and showing off their freezes, tricks and power moves.

Classes are every Friday at Queens Park Leisure Centre, Boundary Road, St Helens from 5:30-6:30

St Helens Northern Soul, Break Dance and Street Dance Heritage Project

UC Crew would like your stories, photos and memorabilia for a St Helens Northern Soul, Break Dance and Street Dance Heritage Project.

UC Crew has been successful with a funding application to St Helens Cultural Hubs to design, deliver and research the music and dance movements of St Helens spanning from the 1970s till present day. The aim of the heritage project is to bring the community together to celebrate our rich heritage of the Northern Soul, Break Dance and Street Dance movements.

There was currently no documented evidence in 2018 to support that St Helens had a Northern Soul scene, which has now changed from speaking to members of the Northern Soul communities we have found out that the scene has stayed active since the 1970s and has a stronger presence in now, that has done throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The findings from our research project will be presented at a special exhibition in St Helens during November 2019.

If you want to get involved in the project as a volunteer or to share your stories, photos videos and memorabilia, please e-mail us on hello@uccrew.co.uk or visit www.sthelenscommunityarchive.org.uk
